What is Wrong with Social Media?

So while I was pondering, I found myself thinking about social media. In doing so I realised that there's something good happening in the world but it's making us (humans) become monsters. So I decided to write this blog post and share my opinions on what I think about social media.

Social media is a good tool for business and everyone to grow, learn, unlearn, share and sometimes be entertained. However, social media has also become the devil. It has shown us that human beings are mean and they tend look down upon each other all in the name of "lol". So I felt a need to address this issue and try to see if there may be any solutions on how we can use social media to our advantage. How we can build and maintain a healthy society and also make sure that we use the platform to make a difference, a good meaningful difference.

It is crucial to bear in mind that there are people in this world who seem to feed on trouble and misery. Who seem to like seeing other people down and miserable for some reason. This is where certain features such as the "block", "mute", and "unfollow" buttons come in handy. Don't allow yourself to be in space where you may find yourself being provoked. Keep a healthy distance from such people.

"Use social media wisely. It's becoming more and more hateful everyday" this was tweeted by @shona_ferguson and I couldn't agree more. There are people whose sole existence on social media seems to be to destroy. Then we have people whose social media lives are a facade and unfortunately some people fall into this trap and want to live those lives. None of it is real. Focus on your real life, do what you have to do, stay real and true to yourself. Social media is beautiful, we've seen new businesses come to life because of social media. Any smart business person will know that social media can make or break their business, so when dealing with clients or providing a service, maintain the standard or make it better because one bad experience shared on social media can negatively affect your business. Before you know it, there's a hashtag aimed at boycotting your business. Use social media to better yourself, to better people around you and if it no longer serves that purpose, leave it.

Social media is also a good tool for confronting yourself. To have a healthy relationship when it comes to social media, you must have some time that is dedicated to yourself and the actual real world. Switch off from the digital world once in a while or at least moderate yourself. Know what purpose social media serves in your life and if you're one of the rotten apples, check yourself, confront yourself and ask yourself why you feel the need to be a bad person towards other people. Self-awareness and honesty to oneself is very important. If you use social media wisely and take the positive you get from it and share it with the whole world, or at least one person, you would've made a difference. As is with almost everything else in the world - there's nothing wrong with social media, it's just a matter of the consumer/user and how they consume/use it.
